Types of Teeth Whitening Appointments
Ready to get rid of your discolored smile? It may be time to explore teeth whitening. There are two ways to get your teeth whitened with us. Step by step, here’s how each one works:
In-Office Treatment
In a single appointment and usually within one hour, our dental team will expertly whiten your smile. This path is ideal if you want a higher concentration of whitening hydrogen peroxide. Here are the steps we will take:
- You will be reclined in the dental chair just as you would be for a routine cleaning. In fact, we may do a very light cleaning to remove any plaque or buildup that might interfere with whitening.
- We then gently paint a protective resin onto your gums to ensuring the whitening agent applies only to your teeth, preventing any irritation. Then a hydrogen-peroxide-based whitening gel begins working on your teeth. Relaxing happens for about 15 minutes while the gel does its work. Just as with your cleaning, we rinse and suction your mouth, in this case removing all the whitening gel.
- After rinsing, we repeat this process one to two more times: gel application, relax, rinse. Throughout the process, we may apply a high-intensity light to your teeth to further enhance whitening.
- You will enjoy immediate whitening effects by several shades upon leaving the office, and brighter color may continue to emerge in the days following your treatment.
At-Home Whitening
If you are less concerned about your smile and would prefer to whiten your teeth gradually over time, we can set you up with an at-home whitening kit. Remember that this option offers a lower concentration of whitening hydrogen peroxide, although it is higher than over-the-counter options. Here are the steps:
- After your regular cleaning, you will receive your at-home whitening kit from our team. The kit will include the hydrogen-peroxide-based whitening gel and dental trays custom made for your teeth.
- Closely follow the enclosed instructions to whiten your teeth once daily preferably before going to sleep and after consuming your last meal and beverage of the evening. You will achieve whitening effects over the course of several days and weeks.
Whether you opt for in-office or at-home whitening, to prolong effects after treatment, avoid foods and beverages that cause yellowing, like coffee, red wine, acidic flavors or sugary treats. Know that regular dental checkups and cleanings every six months are still needed. And remember that keeping up with whitening every six months to three years is the best way to continue to sport those beautiful pearly whites.
